FACIALISM
No two faces, no two images, no two models are the same. Even when they’re mass-produced they aren’t ever repeated. But repetition is the perfect form of imperfection. Repetition is a distortion. Repetition is erotic. When the exploitative function of the image is itself what is being exploited, then the aesthetics of perversion are turned back on the voyeur. It asks the question: what are you really watching?
Norman Wong brings the perspective as an industry fashion photographer to shed the light of 1970s closed circuit television monitors onto the subject of his craft. In so doing, Wong’s “facialism” allows his professional enthusiasm and critical analysis to combine, with at least some authority, to provide the answer: we are all perverts.
Norman has spent most of whatever time he has had away from industry photography since graduating from the University of Toronto in 2008 photographing the emerging icons of the Canadian independent music scene, because he feels it is important to glamorize them.

Studies for possible futures: The Moon and everything else
Maggie Groat
“The compilation of work included in my MFA thesis exhibition Studies for Possible Futures: the Moon and Everything Else derives from my role as amateur cosmographer. The objects and images that I have included in this exhibition are the souvenirs of my cosmological inquiries, accidents, and wonderings. This work has the potential for addition, fluctuation, continuation or revision - gardens that grow, piles that get larger, impossible acts that are performed with incredible hopefulness. This collection is the residue of my research, a study for future actions.”
Maggie Groat is an artist that works primarily in performative gestures that are documented through photographs, objects, text, drawings and oral accounts. The remnants of these gestures resist non-linear methods of presentation, in an attempt to tell a story that, perhaps, has no ending. Maggie Groat received her BFA from York Univeristy in 2007 and is currently a Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the Univeristy of Guelph.

While You Were Away
Illustrations by Maryanna Hardy
“While you were away, I stayed awake. I saw all the colors come together to become black. I could whistle up to the spectres, who float down and glide through us. ”
Working with paintbrush, ink and paper, Maryanna Hardy takes a visual inventory of the events taking place on any given night. She uses her own personal mythos of nighttime as her guidelines; the park you should not walk through alone and the northern lights you should never whistle at… and what happens when you do.
Nighttime carries its own set of emotions that evoke a different type of behaviour. It contains fear and curiosity, a tranquility that is almost violent, and a feeling of excitement for what you can’t see or possibly know.
“While You Were Away” is Maryanna’s first solo show in Toronto.

Linda Chalmers
Chromophobia
Linda Chalmers is an emerging artist who is interested in the visual fusion of the organic and inorganic; the gestural and the digitized. In 2009, she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Ontario College of Art & Design in Toronto, with a major in Drawing and Painting. This year, Linda was awarded the Award of Merit from The Ontario Society of Artists and DeSerres, and in 2008, she was the first recipient of the Catherine Daigle Award, a distinction that recognizes excellence in the arts by a female artist.
Chromophobia is Linda’s solo exhibition of paintings that is centred around artist and writer David Batchelor’s theory that Western culture has a fear of colour.
